Description

A herdsman boy falls asleep on the mountain and wakes to find two cradles beside him and two infants crying. He feeds them. Their mothers - zana, the spirits of the high country - come back at dawn and offer him anything. He could ask for gold, or for land, or for the girl in the valley who will not look at him. He asks to be strong enough that nobody can take anything from him again. They grant it, and they attach a condition he will not understand for years: the strength is theirs, it is lent, and the day he forgets who it belongs to is the day it leaves him.
