epic toon

About

The world's enduring stories, drawn as webtoons.

What this is

epic toon adapts myth, epic, legend, folklore and classic literature as vertical-scroll comics. Every story we draw is in the public domain, and each series names the source work it comes from on its own page.

25 series are announced. 3 of them have drawn episodes you can read today: The Long Way Home, The Beauty of the Earth, The Beauty of the Sky. The rest have no art yet, and their pages say so rather than implying otherwise.

How the artwork is made

Every image here is original and made for these series, in one house style. Nothing on the site is stock photography or a borrowed illustration.

Finished episodes are drawn panel by panel, lettered, and composed into the scroll segments you read. 3 of our 25 series have episodes drawn that way today.

Most series have cover art only so far. A cover shows what a series will look like, not an episode you can open. Where a series has no drawn episodes its page says so and offers nothing to read, so nothing here is presented as a comic page that is not one.

Which version we adapt

Most of this material exists in several incompatible tellings, and flattening them into one correct version would be a claim we cannot back. Each series names the source work it adapts, and where the telling matters we say which one.

Much of this is living culture rather than neutral antiquity. Folklore and myth belong to communities that still hold them. Nothing here is endorsed by any tradition, and no retelling should be read as the definitive form of a story.
