Description

The village keeps the spring-house clean, keeps the water clear, and does not let children throw stones into the pool - and if you ask why, you get a shrug and a change of subject. She belongs to the running water. She has been here longer than the village and she will be here after it, and the arrangement between them has held for generations on the understanding that neither side looks too closely at the other. Then a new miller dams the stream for his wheel, and a young woman nobody recognises walks into the village at dusk to ask him to stop.
