Description
A king finds his wife unfaithful, has her killed, and settles on a policy: a new wife every night, executed at dawn, so that no woman can betray him twice. The kingdom runs out of daughters. Then the vizier's own daughter volunteers. Shahrazad has worked out something nobody else has - that a story broken off at sunrise buys one more day, and that a thousand such mornings might buy a life. She is not pleading and she is not hiding. She is running the longest bargain in literature, and every tale she tells is a move in it.
