Description

He comes out of the surf on a black horse, he is bigger than any man has a right to be, and no one on this coast has beaten him. He takes tribute, he takes cattle, and when he has taken everything else he takes daughters, and the villages pay because the alternative has been tried. He is not a monster and that is the frightening part - he is a warrior, he is courteous, he gives his terms plainly and he keeps them. Then a message comes back from a house up the mountain, from a man who has not left his bed in nine years, and it is not a negotiation.
